Goal: Learn the symbols that tell you where to breathe and where to keep going.

Content: When you are reciting alone, one of the biggest challenges is knowing when to stop. The Quran has a built-in “Traffic Light” system using small letters above the words.

  The Compulsory Stop (مـ): You must stop here.
•  
  The Prohibited Stop (لا): Do not stop here unless you have run out of breath.
•  
  The Choice (ج): You can stop or keep going; both are fine!
•  
  The Better to Continue (صلى): You can stop, but it is better to keep reading.
•  
  The Better to Stop (قلى): You can keep going, but it is better to stop.
•  
  Self-Correction Tip: If you run out of breath and stop at a “No Stop” (لا) sign, simply go back one or two words and start again to ensure the meaning is preserved.

  Exercise: Open Surah Al-Baqarah, Page 2. Count how many ‘Jeem’ (ج) symbols you can find. Practice stopping at each one.
