Goal: Master the “2-Beat” rule for long vowels.
Content: The “Mad” (Stretching) is what gives Quranic recitation its beautiful melody.
-
The Three Mad Letters: Alif (ا), Waw (و), and Ya (ي).
-
The Rule: If a letter has a vowel and is followed by its matching Mad letter, you must stretch the sound for 2 beats.
-
A-a: Fatha followed by Alif (e.g., بَـا).
-
Ee-ee: Kasra followed by Ya (e.g., بِـي).
-
Oo-oo: Damma followed by Waw (e.g., بُـو).
-
-
Self-Correction Tip: To measure a “beat,” simply open or close one finger. For a 2-beat Mad, close your finger twice.
-
Exercise: Recite Surah Al-Kafirun. This Surah is full of 2-beat stretches (like in the word “Laaa”). Use your fingers to count the beats as you listen to a Qari.
