Goal: Learn the layout of the Quran so you can find your way around easily.
Content: The Mushaf is organized in a specific way to help you track your progress. Understanding these symbols is like having a map for your journey.
-
Juz’ and Hizb: The Quran is divided into 30 equal parts called Juz’. Each Juz’ is further divided into two Hizb. These help you set long-term goals (e.g., “I will finish one Juz’ per month”).
-
Sajdah Symbols (۩): You will see a small tower or arch symbol in the margin. This indicates a “Prostration of Recitation.” When you read or hear this verse, it is Sunnah to perform a single Sujud.
-
Surah Headers: These tell you the name of the Surah, if it was revealed in Makkah or Madinah, and how many verses it contains.
-
Self-Correction Tip: Always check the Surah header to see if you are starting a new section. Knowing the context (Makki vs. Madani) can often help you understand the “mood” and pace of the recitation.
-
Exercise: Pick a random page in the middle of the Quran. Can you identify which Juz’ you are in and find the nearest Hizb marker?
