Goal: Identify the most common “Self-Study” mistakes before they become habits.
Content: When teaching yourself, it’s easy to fall into “Lazy Habits.” Here are the top 3 and how to fix them:
-
Pitfall 1: Stretching short vowels. Many people turn a “Ba” (بَ) into a “Baa” (بَـا).
-
The Fix: Keep short vowels “sharp” and “quick.”
-
-
Pitfall 2: Skipping the “Heavy” letters. Turning a ‘Dawd’ (ض) into a ‘Dal’ (د).
-
The Fix: Always remember to fill your mouth with air for the “Heavy Seven” letters.
-
-
Pitfall 3: Rushing. Speed is the enemy of Tajweed.
-
The Fix: Use the “Finger-Counting” method for every stretch. If it’s a 2-beat stretch, your finger must move.
-
-
Self-Correction Tip: If you find a word too difficult, break it down into syllables. (Example: ‘Ya-sta-ghfi-roon’). Read it slow, then medium, then normal speed.
-
Exercise: Look through Surah Al-Kafirun. This Surah is famous for testing your “long vs. short” vowels. Practice reading it very slowly.
